Lebanon's Wheat Security: Import Dependence and Storage Questions

An analysis of food-security risks, without an independently verified national buffer estimate.

Executive Summary

Import dependence and storage capacity are central questions for Lebanon's food security. The previously published 45–60-day buffer estimate and other quantitative findings are withdrawn pending a verifiable dataset. This article does not provide a current inventory or downloadable data.

Food security is usually discussed in Lebanon only during shocks — the 2020 explosion, the 2022 Ukraine disruption.

A defensible assessment of wheat security requires dated import records, a verified inventory of usable storage and explicit consumption assumptions. The figures previously presented here cannot be substantiated from a retained dataset.

No original dataset is available for download or reuse with this article.

Evidence & Sources

  • Monthly trade statistics — Lebanese Customs
  • UN Comtrade mirror data — United Nations
  • Lebanon Food Security Update — World Bank / WFP

The Numbers

The import series, facility inventory and three-scenario buffer calculation previously described here are not available. The article therefore makes no current numerical estimate of the national wheat buffer.

What Could Realistically Be Done

A public, dated inventory of usable storage and a reproducible calculation of consumption needs would make the storage discussion more accountable. The earlier financing-status assertion and quantified delay claim are withdrawn pending exact supporting records.

Methodology

The Institute does not have the compiled import, storage and consumption dataset previously described in this article. The listed sources do not establish that customs records were cross-checked, storage surveyed or buffer days calculated. No downloadable annex or verified April 2026 data update is available.

Corrections

2026-10-15 — Research evidence review (2026-10-15): Withdrawn the 45–60-day buffer estimate, import/storage figures and unsupported financing assertion, and corrected the claim that an original dataset and annex were available. Reclassified from Data to Analysis; revised headline, summary and evidence framing. No numerical table has been fabricated. Article images were preserved.
